Movie Review: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Virtually everything that we said 'Robin Hood', the new version of the myth led by a reluctant Ridley Scott, we can repeat now to talk about 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time', soulless blockbuster summer with Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney intend to repeat the phenomenon of the blockbuster trilogy Pirates of the Caribbean '(and we are already preparing the fourth, and possibly the fifth and sixth).

Of course, there are similarities between the two products, there is even a character very similar to Captain Jack Sparrow (Sheik Amar, who gives life a fun Alfred Molina), but basically everything is to try to imitate the style of intense adventures of the Indiana Jones saga and Star Wars. However, while the writers of Pirates of the Caribbean 'were able at times (in the first and the second installment) to reach that level of excitement and fun, magic, darkness and show, the' Prince of Persia '(Doug Miro Carlo Bernard and Boaz Yakin) just come, sadly lacking in imagination and passion, certainly drowned out by the demands and glittering ideas from greedy producers, we know what history they do not care, consistency, and of course, cinema.

Based on the popular video game by Jordan Mechner, 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time' ('Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time') presents the valiant Prince Dastan, a young man of humble origins in the midst of a battle by chance, finds a powerful sword, a gift from the gods to which you can return to the past. Accused of murdering his stepfather, the king of Persia, while celebrating an important military conquest, Dastan escapes by the beautiful Tamina, guardian of magic dagger, and together they embark on a journey that will try to prevent the weapon from falling into the wrong hands, can provoke the anger of the gods and the end of the world.

This plot, which already bored with just writing it, is the starting point of an endless, chaotic, supposedly spectacular sequences (because there are many visual effects) that are interrupted by other allegedly dramatic and comic (because the actors speak). Almost nothing works, is almost never achieved that aim to entertain, to get into the story, have you glued to the screen following every moment of a fantastic and exotic adventure. And this is true not only because the script is full of predictable situations and improbable solutions (the villain's plan is really absurd), or because the same players are not involved in what they do, posing more than acting, but because behind the camera is a mediocre director who simply do not know what does.

Britain's Mike Newell and proved to be an incompetent director to handle a blockbuster when it took over from Alfonso Cuarón in the Harry Potter film 'The Goblet of Fire', possibly the worst delivery of which there so far. However, here he is again, orchestrating and destroying another blockbuster. Prince of Persia 'is a film hasty, clumsy, badly narrated and really unbearable when the action explodes. Because this type is another who can not shoot action, he thinks that the scene is cut into pieces and make some noise. The initial assault, for example, we do not even show how it starts, is a complete nonsense in which nothing is visible and in which the characters go from one place to another without knowing why, solving all sorts of problems impossible in an instant.

Does not help that the protagonist is nothing short of a superhero, almost flying when he jumps, is tireless, can spend days without food and is able to find a needle in the desert. It is difficult to engage in a movie when everything revolves around a character who is always impeccable, which is not even ruffles her hair, and indeed is dull interpreted by an actor who does not fit the role. Because the truth is that neither have been very successful with the casting. Jake Gyllenhaal is to exploit the physical limits that worked for 'Jarhead', neglecting the interpretation and chemistry with his partner Gemma Arterton, who also does much more than pout out in each scene. Clearly, these two are there for anything other than acting, including free scenes inserted in order to look further (Gyllenhaal stars in a street fight bare-chested and looks Arterton curves in a scene that serves no purpose in which both they dressed in the desert for a few moments).

Amid the noise and nonsense (the dagger is the most precious object on the planet, but it goes hand in hand with ease), it is a joy to the participation of Alfred Molina and Ben Kingsley, whose mere presence on the screen appropriated , stealing the spotlight from the two young mannequins. The two veteran actors bring to life two characters just as absurd as the rest, but managed to hide with his charisma and experience, despite living in the moment and giving us all the best moments in the film (eye gestures when visiting Kingsley the Hassansin or the hilarious scene with the ostrich Molina).  Thanks to them is achieved by supporting a film that lasts less than two hours but that comes to be so silly eternal seal (one dreams of having a dagger and go back to the time when he decided to enter the room), and in which not even include the scenarios, resulting all too harsh and false, plasterboard digitized.

I imagine that video game fans can enjoy it a bit more, seeing on the big screen the story that have previously played (if it is anything like), and those who are content with the least impact whenever there are many actors and handsome, well then do they get bored, because as they say, the cinema is to eat popcorn (do not you?), but the rest I do not think you find more than yawns and despair in this 'Prince of Persia', which is quite worse than expected.  For now we still conforming with the correct 'Iron Man 2', while on the premiere of the new Christopher Nolan, perhaps the only one still can give us a great show "Made in Hollywood" this year.

Thanks for the review. I am a big fan of this game. I have been playing it since my teens, and it has gone from strength to strength. Pity Hollywood is making what sounds like a mess of it.
