63LOCATION, EXTENSION AND POPULATION
The department of Arequipa is located in the southeastern part of the country. To the north bordering Ica, Ayacucho and Apurimac, Moquegua to the south, east to Cuzco and Puno, on the west by the Pacific Ocean. Because it encompasses the coast and mountains, the weather is varied (intense heat in summer and low temperatures in winter).
It covers an area of 63.528 km 2 and its population is around one million inhabitants.
Its capital is Arequipa, a city about 2.335 meters above sea level, with beautiful architecture, ashlar base, landscapes and countryside, and a dry climate with mild temperatures.
HISTORICAL OVERVIEW
The department of Arequipa has a history dating back to ancient times. It is estimated that the first inhabitants are from 6 thousand to 8 thousand years before Christ, during the Paleolithic Period. The
evidence of its existence is near the region of Yarabamba in Pampa
Colorada and Sumbay behind the Misti, where we will see rock paintings
in caves.
When the Incas expanded their domains in these regions by the fifteenth century found two well-established ethnic groups in the Colca Valley region: the Callaguas and the Cabanas, who noted for its agriculture, which is evident so far with its platforms and system irrigation.
On August 15, 1540, under the command of Captain Manuel García Carbajal, the Spanish founded the "Villa Hermosa de Arequipa" a year later, King Charles V raised to the level of city and gives the coat of arms that remains until today.
The so-called "White City" by the white of its buildings constructed of blocks of stone (petrified volcanic ash) from the Chachani volcano, was an important bastion of the struggle for independence in the nineteenth century. Among the precursors are Vizcardo and Juan Pablo Guzman, author of the Letter to the Spanish Americans, Francisco Javier de Luna Pizarro, President of the First Constitutional Congress in 1822 and the poet Mariano Melgar, executed in Humachiri.
