1. Gretna Green, May 22, 1915 Scotland
The worst tragedy in
the history of British railways took place when a collision between a
train and a passenger soldiers caused 227 deaths in this town in the UK.
The worker in charge forgot to change
the local railway line to be diverted at that point minutes later and
left the way clear for one that came with soldiers. The two collided, the train with
the troops was reduced to half its size with the impact and its remnants
gave the railroad stop that was located a few meters. Minutes later, another train collided with what was left of the train of soldiers who died inside the vehicle.
2. Torre del Bierzo, Spain January 3, 1944
Inside the tunnel No. 20 (demolished in 1987) of the line Palencia-La
Coruña, at the height of the town of Torre del Bierzo (León) a mail
train, a locomotive maneuvers and a freight train collided. The exact toll was never
clarified, since the regime masked the magnitude of the accident, but
estimates of the time pointed that there were nearly 200 deaths. Studies conducted more recently raised the death toll above 500.
The story of the accident was
the title of a short film (Tunnel No. 20) led by Ramon de Fontecha, who
won the Goya for best short documentary in 2002.
3. Yokohama, near Tokyo November 9, 1963
A freight train collided with two passenger trains. Although none was at high speeds, 161 people died.
4. London, United Kingdom December 12, 1988 A total of 35 people died and 500 were injured in a collision of three trains in the Chatham junction in Londo. Apparently a short circuit made passing a signal from green to red and, although the first train did not heed the red signal, two and confusion it caused the accident.
5. Szajol, Hungary December 2, 1994 A car of an express train derailed and crashed into the building Szajol station in Hungary. 29 dead and 60 wounded were from the accident.
6. Badrshein, Egypt December 22, 1995 At least 70 people died and hundreds more injured when a train in the town of Bardshein, a few miles from Cairo, had to stop walking because of dense fog and another collided from behind with this. Although the official version of the fog, witnesses said they never explained the cause of the accident.
7. Madhya Pradesh, central India September 15, 1997 Five cars of a passenger express train plunged into a river, killing at least 70 people and wounding 175. The train was traveling from the city of Ahmedabad in the western state of Gujarat, towards Howrah, West Bengal. Apparently, the train stopped in obedience to a sign, but the first five cars derailed (four wagons with about 300 passengers and a cargo) fell into the Hansdev river, about 800 miles south of New Delhi.
8. Lower Saxony, Germany June 3, 1998 This rail disaster left 101 dead and dozens injured. Part of a high-speed ICE train derailed because of a faulty wheel and hit the pillar of a bridge. After the accident, more than 100 high-speed trains were pulled from circulation to make revisions.
9. Ryongchon, North Korea April 22, 2004 Two trains in North Korea, carrying oil and liquefied gas, crashed and caused an explosion in a village near the border with China. Dead and injured, the accident left about three thousand victims, as it not only destroyed the Ryongchon station, but also caused the destruction of a five-story building nearby.
The mystery surrounding this tragedy because of the control of the media by the North Korean government. For example, the state television broadcast was devoted to military music and broke the news of the accident.
that time, while authorities have assured that the accident left 150 dead and thousands wounded, the British ambassador in that country said there were hundreds dead and thousands injured. The Red Cross, meanwhile, spoke of 54 dead and 1,249 wounded.
10. Amagasaki, Japan 26 April 2005 A seven-car train with 580 passengers derailed and slammed into an apartment building of nine floors. 73 people were killed and nearly 450 injured. Apparently the accident was caused by speeding.
